Google to test TV service

Posted on March 9, 2010 · Leave a Comment

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Google Inc., along with Dish Network, is testing a new television-programming search service  that allows users to search content from Web videos and personalize a lineup of shows.  This is the Internet giant’s lates effort in combining Internet content with conventional TV.

“The service, which runs on TV set-top boxes containing Google software, allows users to find shows on the satellite-TV service as well as video from Web sites like Google’s YouTube.”

With this development, Google would like to increase revenues for its advertising sales business by allowing it to target ads to individual households based on search and viewing data.  It appears that Google’s ultimate strategy is to deliver ads across many Internet-enabled devices from many Web sites.

What do you think, Brassfield Park residents?  Is Google trying to get a little too much information?  I understand the business benefits for Google, but I’m not sure if I want to be target marketed like that through the TV.  Imagine watching television and all of the commercials you watch are specifically tailored to your preferences and likes.  It just seems a bit intrusive.

Brassfield Park Brain Twister #2

Posted on March 4, 2010 · 1 Comment

OK, folks…here is the answer to last weeks Brain Twister.

Mary was talking about her father and her maternal grandfather.

Her father, for example, could be 50 and her mother`s father, her maternal grandfather, could be 50. Her mother is obviously younger than her father.

Congratulations to Gianna for being the first to figure it out correctly!  Here is the next one:

You are a prisoner in a dungeon, with a torturer who likes to gamble. One day, he brings you two glasses of transparent liquids. He tells you one is water and the other is poison, which if completely drunk will kill you. He then forces you into an empty cell. You have 5 minutes to drain one glass, and leave the other full. What do you do? (You must drink one full glass.)

We all know that March is THE month for college basketball.  With conference tournaments, and then the NCAA tournament both getting ready to go, its time to start considering where the best place to watch the games will be this year.  Everybody has a favorite spot, I’m sure.  What is yours?

For all of us unfamiliar with the area, it would be great if you could put up an endorsement for your favorite spot.  Tell us why it would be THE place to go to catch March Madness.  I’ve listed a few local sports bars here to help the thought process but feel free to list your own favorite (or tell us what your least favorite spot is and why).

  • Buffalo’s Bar & Grill, 2704 Battleground Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27408
  • Fat Dogs Grill and Pub, 2503 Spring Garden St, Greensboro, NC 27403

Brassfield Park Brain Twister #1

Posted on February 26, 2010 · 5 Comments

I’m a big fan of riddles.  They are a great way to exercise your brain.  If you have a minute, try to figure this one out and post your explanation as a comment.  I’ll post the answer sometime next week.  Let’s see who the real brainiacs of Brassfield Park are! =)

For Show and Tell at school, Lisa told her class that today was the birthday of both her father and her grandfather and that they were exactly the same age. Her teacher said that was impossible, but Lisa insisted she was right. Can you explain how she could be right?
